After graduating from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge with a First in English, and subsequently the Inns of Court School of Law, where he was graded ‘Outstanding' and awarded a prize for advocacy, John practised as a barrister at renowned shipping and insurance set 7 King's Bench Walk from 1997 to 2015, specialising in all types of dry shipping litigation, disputes relating to vessel construction, insurance and reinsurance, and general commercial disputes, including (non-medical) professional negligence.

John acted in a substantial number of leading cases and high-value claims in the areas of shipping and insurance, appearing in the Commercial and Admiralty Courts, the Court of Appeal, the Chancery Division, the Queen's Bench Division and before arbitration tribunals. Following a year working at a vineyard on the Mosel, John joined Waterson Hicks in March 2016. John has a dual capacity practising certificate and is registered both as a barrister with 7 King's Bench Walk and also as a consultant with this firm.

John speaks fluent German and is qualified as a translator from German to English.

In his spare time, John is a musician, playing saxophone and other woodwind, enjoys running and has an interest in wine.
